Q17: How do I make local, long distance or international calls ?
A17: Dial the numbers as you would do with any other phone.
Q18: Can I call anyone, or do they also have to be a YUP subscriber ?
A18: You can call anyone whether they are a YUP customer or not. There is a difference in that calls from YUP customers to other YUP customers are free and unlimited no matter where they live in the world.
The other person does not have to have our service, although we hope that you will recommend our service to all of your friends and family! If you make long distance calls, those calls will be billed at our low rates.
Q19: If I use YUP in foreign countries, do I dial differently ? If traveling, do people have to dial a different number to reach me ?
A19: One of the major benefits of YUP is that you can make and receive calls from anywhere in the world where high-speed Internet access is available.
Your dialing pattern remains the same no matter where you are.
Q20: How do I set up and use YUP Voice mail ?
A20: To access or to configure your voice mail, either dial 7001 from your YUP phone, or dial your public YUP Service Number from any phone, then enter * when the voice prompt begins and then your password. Follow the instructions to configure your settings or retrieve voice mail.
Q21: Can I call a toll-free number from my YUP phone ?
A21: No, YUP service does not complete any calls toll-free numbers.
Q22: Why am I unable to dial certain toll-free numbers ?
A22: The toll-free number that you are dialing may be a regional toll-free number and not a national number. Companies using regional toll-free numbers pay toll charges for these calls. Since calls are routed via the Internet with the BefairCommunications service the number that you are dialing from may be recognized as a long distance number and, therefore, the call may not be completed.
Q23: Do you offer any type of money back guarantee, what is your cancellation policy ?
A23: If you cancel service and return any DPA or SIP phone (in re-sellable condition) you've purchased from us within 15 days of when you ordered service, we'll refund your setup cost, your device purchase.
Q24: Can I use your service with my home alarm system or personal emergency response services company ?
A24: Yes, it will work simply by connecting your alarm to the YUP device.
However, we recommend that you keep a regular phone line for a home alarm or personal emergency response device, because your YUP device depends on your broadband Internet connection and electrical power.
Please consult your current alarm service provider for further information.
Q25: What is VoIP ?
A25: VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows you to make and receive phone calls over your high-speed Internet connection.
Calls can be made using a wide variety of devices including a standard touch-tone phone. With a good connection, you get the same quality and even better as with traditional phone service, but you typically get many more features and pay far less for your calls than you've been getting from your local telephone company.
Q26: What is broadband or high-speed Internet access ?
A26: The most common high-speed connections for homes are DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and Cable modems running at 256Kbit to 768Kbit.
Businesses typically use either DSL running at 768Kbit to 4Mbit (Megabits per second) or connections known as T-1 (1.5Mbit), T-3 (45Mbit), or Ethernet (10Mbit to 100Mbit or even 1Gbit).
Wireless Internet access services like WiFi, HSDPA and WiMax are starting to become popular as well. You can use YUP over any of these broadband Internet connections.
Q27: My YUP DPA/Phone is behind a firewall, what ports do I need to open ?
A27: Most of our customers just connect their DPA or Phone and start using the service because we have designed the service to work behind most firewalls.
If you have an older or more complex firewall, make sure that UDP or TCP traffic from you to the outside world is open. Otherwise, you won't ever register with our server and won't be able to make calls.
Q28: Will YUP service work with Internet access over satellite ?
A28: It is not reliable.
Satellite service introduces quite a bit of delay or latency into an Internet connection, and that delay makes it very difficult for any VoIP service to work properly.
Q29: Does YUP work with WiFi or WiMax (wireless Internet) networks ?
A29: Yes. You can use YUP if your wireless ISP (Internet Service Provider) or your home network provides an Ethernet connection into which you can connect your YUP Telephone Adapter.
Many YUP customers have wireless networks at home or a subscription to a wireless ISP.
In addition, if you are using YUP via a softphone with an USB handset or headset, wherever you log into a WiFi Hotspot.
Q30: Is it possible to cancel my traditional telephone service and still keep the DSL service on that line ?
A30: You need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and ask them, as every provider has different rules and regulations.
YUP will not contact any of your current telecommunications providers.
